Robert Welch

1929-2000 イギリス
英国Hereford生まれ。 Birmingham College of Artにて銀細工を学ぶ。1952年よりロンドンのRoyal College of Artにてステンレスの生産とデザインを専攻。在学中に奨学金を得てスウェーデンへ渡り工業デザインを学ぶ。その後、ノルウェーに渡り銀細工職人Theodor Olsenの下で修行を重ねる。Welchがステンレス素材の可能性に着目したのは、この頃だと言われています。また、機能美と無駄のないシンプルな北欧デザインは、後のWelchの作品に大きな影響を与えました。北欧から帰国、1955年より英国Old Hall社のデザインコンサルタントとして活躍。ステンレスの加圧成形や溶接技術に精通したWelchは、一般市民が日常生活で使えるようなステンレス製の食器・ポット・カトラリー類を数多く生み出しました。中でも1962年にデザインした"Alverston"シリーズはDesign Councilを受賞。また、1965年には英国で名誉あるRoyal Designer for Industryを受賞。Welchはスンレス製品の他に、キャンドルスタンドに代表される鋳鉄製品もデザインしています。
