1911-1989 フィンランド
Kaj Franckはヴィーブリ生まれ。ヘルシンキの美術工芸大学で家具デザインを学ぶ。1938年にテキスタイルデザイナーに。第2次世界大戦をフィンランド敗北をいう形で経験する。この経験がのちにカイフランクおよびフィンランド国民にデザイン文化において大きな影響を与える。物資の少ない中でのフィンランドデザインの復興を目指す。1945年Arabia社に入社しデザイナーとして就任する。1950年には同社のアートディレクターに就任。デザインだけではなく生産面の能率も考え作品を製作する。代表作にのちにTeemaシリーズとして現在でもロングセラーを続けているKiltaシリーズを発表する。 1946年からはiittala社で仕事をはじめ1950年からはNuutajarvi社でもガラス製作の仕事を始める。Nuutajarvi社ではカルティオシリーズの原形となる薄さが特徴的なblown glassを発表し1点1点手吹き製法で製作されたグラスは現在でも高い評価、人気を得る。Nuutajarvi社の同時期にSaara Hopeaも在籍しておりカイフランクと並びNuutajarvi社を代表するデザイナーに成長する。装飾をなくし機能を重視したシンプルなデザインを追求する。その中でもGlass製作では芸術的なアート作品も残す。カイ・フランク現在でも世界中で愛されているフィンランドの良心。
